National Dog Day is Saturday, August 26, 2023

August 21, 2023 by Michelle Bedard

National Dog Day is Saturday, August 26, 2023, an annual event started in 2004 by Colleen Paige, an author, conservationist, and pet and family lifestyle expert.

Paige chose to celebrate National Dog Day on August 26 because that is the day she adopter her first dog, Sheltie, from the local animal shelter. Her goal in celebrating National Dog Day is to “bring attention to the plight of animals around the globe and encourage adoption.”

Celebrate National Dog Day with these Doggie Deals

You don’t have to wait for the weather to be cooler to enjoy a Busch Pumpkin Spice Dog Brew. The non-alcoholic dog brew is made from all natural ingredients including pumpkin, cinnamon, ginger, turmeric and water and can be ordered from shopbeergear.com.

Dunkin’ Supports Dogs for Joy on National Dog Day

For every iced latte ordered on National Dog Day via the Dunkin’ mobile app, Dunkin’ will donate $1 to the Joy in Childhood Foundation to support the Dogs for Joy program.

Dogs for Joy is a program that matches in-residence service dogs with children who are hospitalized and in need of some loving canine support, training, and incentive during their treatments.

These dogs have a full-time job and responsibility to provide happiness to the young patients and to teach the children how to take medication, keep calm during medical intervention, and perform physical therapy.

“Since 2018, the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation’s “Dogs for Joy Program” has granted 33 full-time pediatric service dogs to 18 children’s hospitals across the country” (source).

So this Saturday, support dogs and children by downloading the Dunkin app and ordering your iced latte.

Congrats to all of our Puppy Bowl 2023 Doggie Participants

February 10, 2023 by Michelle Bedard

Puppy Bowl 2023 was a huge success, and all of our doggie participants had an amazing time!

The rivalries started well before game time, with some lick smacking and some smack talk about their mothers, but all in all, a great time was had at Puppy Bowl 2023!

Highlights of Puppy Bowl 2023

It was a mad dash for the football as dogs ran in and out of bounds, sniffed each other, stopped to scratch an itch, get some one-on-one coaching from the sidelines by our dedicated staff pros.

Of course, some of the dogs were there merely for the spotlight while the more athletic dogs were definitely there for the win.

Viewers can take a look at the online activity by visiting our video the day of Puppy Bowl 2023!

The Bigs Take the Field for Puppy Bowl 2023

In our second game of Puppy Bowl 2023, the Bigs seemed to get the idea of carrying the football all the way down the field. While coaches cheered from the sidelines or even handed off the footballs, we can see most of the game was friendly.

Teal and yellow bandanas separated the teams while our friendly staff took to the field in jerseys of their own. Cheers and excitement filled the air while our rambunctious Bigs (with one very athletic Little!) looked for direction from their coaches.

Some dogs clearly understood the game while some were just happy to make the team! All in all, Puppy Bowl was a lot of fun, and as always, a huge success!

We’d like to give a huge THANKS to our sponsor, The Ranch Pet Resort and Spa, for filling our day with football, fun, bandanas, and prizes!

Congrats to the Winners of Puppy Bowl 2023!

Everyone is a winner in the eyes of Puppy Bowl 2023! As long as everyone left the fields a better sport than he or she entered, we are happy!

But every year we have standouts, and these dogs deserve individual attention.

Making a third appearance and being recognized for a third year in a row is Sugar! Previously our MVP two years in a row, Sugar has been awarded 2023’s Offensive Player Award.

Rutherford earns the title of MVP with agile moves and attention to the ball! Rutherford is sure to be picked up by the pro’s!

MVP for the Littles was awarded to Willow, who even at his picture taking, was still flying high with energy and enthusiasm!

Thank you to everyone who supported Puppy Bowl 2023! See you next year!

Puppy Bowl 2023 is Coming to The Ranch Pet Resort and Spa!

January 31, 2023 by Michelle Bedard

The biggest event of the year is upon us as Puppy Bowl 2023 revs up for its third year at The Ranch Pet Resort and Spa.

Word around the locker room is that the Bigs and Littles have some new plays to bring the house down! Could we have a better Puppy Bowl than the last two years?

The Countdown is on to Puppy Bowl 2023

On February 8th, 50 of the cutest, fastest, most agile and athletic dog athletes will be competing against each other during Puppy Bowl 2023.

This wildly popular event pits Bigs vs Bigs and Littles vs Littles in the greatest football game in the Tri-Valley.

Goldens take on shepherds; min pins wrestle jack russels; the refs make the calls; the crowd goes wild; everyone has the best time during Puppy Bowl 2023.

Sign Your Dog Up Today for Puppy Bowl 2023

Puppy Bowl 2023 will take place on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. All doggie care customers are eligible for the event. A $15 charge will help with the fee to pay the refs (we are kidding here! We can’t avoid any conflicts of interest!) and offset the costs incurred with this fantastic and very popular event!

Sign up for doggie daycare on Wednesday, February 8, and let us know you want your dog to be part of Puppy Bowl 2023!

Top Five Reasons to Sign Your Dog up for Puppy Bowl 2023

  • All the cool dogs are doing it, and we don’t want your dog left out! Dogs will be grouped in compatible teams so even if your dog isn’t an athletic rockstar, there’s room for everyone in our Puppy Bowl game!
  • Every dog wants to be named MVP, and this year is no exception. The dogs in daycare are already practicing their moves and groves, their dodges and dives, their jumps and jives; it’s going to be tough picking an MVP but at Puppy Bowl 2023, there’s always one hero who stands out above the crowd. Will it be your dog? Sign up now for Puppy Bowl 2023!
  • Awards for water boy, water girl, and MVP Dog and Puppy will be given. Who doesn’t love to be recognized for their achievements?
  • Prizes will be given out, and we hear the prizes are amazing!!!! Don’t miss out! Sign your dog up today for Puppy Bowl 2023.
  • All dogs who sign up will be decked out in Team Swag Bandanas. Now, we know that sometimes dogs get athlete’s fright and simply poop out (literally sometimes); conk out; get put on IR list; never get out from on, off, or under the bench; or just don’t feel like playing. We understand, but everyone wants to feel like part of the team by being decked out in Puppy Bowl 2023 swag bandanas. Reserve your spot today!

Watch Puppy Bowl from Facebook

When athletes are preparing for the Big Game, they can’t be distracted by their fans! But The Ranch Pet Resort and Spa knows you want to be a part of the action of Puppy Bowl 2023, so we post videos of the day’s events!

Tune in to Facebook to see Live Events as they unfold during Puppy Bowl 2023!

Do not miss out! Space is limited, so sign your dog up today for Puppy Bowl 2023!

Bigger Dogs in Need of Homes. Where are Adopters?

August 20, 2022 by Michelle Bedard

Ducky is available for Adoption at Berkeley Humane

A year ago, there was a record number of animals adopted into loving homes. Families found more time and opportunity to welcome a new family member due to the effects of COVID. Sadly, a record number of animals have recently been turned into shelters since people stopped working remotely. The time commitment, expense of owning a pet, lack of available vets, and life changes have caused pets to be turned into a shelter; and a lot of those animals are still waiting for their forever homes.

In a recent CBS news report, Berkeley Humane expressed the sadness and frustration at the lack of adopters and the number of larger dogs who are still waiting for their forever home.

The news segment featured Carly Skonnard from Berkeley Humane who showcased two beautiful dogs, Kieran a shepherd mix, and Ducky, a Doberman Pinscher.

Kieran from Berkeley Humane has been in the shelter for half a year

Both dogs are friendly, health-checked, and overlooked. Berkeley Humane staff train the dogs and spend time with them and want nothing better than to find the perfect adopter for these long-time residents.

Bark and Meow Around the Block Pet Adoption Event at Berkeley Humane

To help ease the financial burden of adopting a pet for life, Berkeley Humane is hosting Bark and Meow Around the Block on Saturday, August 27, from 10 am to 4 pm at 2700 9th Street, Berkeley.

The Adopt on the Spot event features dogs and cats wanting a forever home. “Adoptable dogs, cats, puppies and kittens will be vaccinated, microchipped, and ready to go home! Adoption fees are waived for this event. Adoption counseling will be provided to help set up new pet families for success!”

For more information about the event or to adopt a pet for life, please visit the Berkeley Humane website.

Summer Tips to Keep Your Pets Happy, Healthy, and Safe

June 22, 2022 by Michelle Bedard

The happiness, health, and safety of your pets is a priority at The Ranch Pet Resort and Spa.

Anyone who has been to our facility for grooming, doggie daycare, or pet boarding understands how much we love your pets as well as our own.

As the summer approaches, we thought it would be a doggone good idea to provide you with Summer Tips to Keep Your Pets Happy, Healthy, and Safe.

Never Leave Your Pet Unattended in a Car

No matter how quick you think your errand is going to be and how much you and your pet love going for drives in the car, never leave your pet unattended in a car.

The temperature outside is no indication of the temperature that quickly rises in a car. The temperature inside of a car can quickly rise to 120 degrees even if windows are cracked.

While we know how much fun it is for both our pets and us to spend time together, when it’s hot outside, please leave your pets at home!

Time Your Walks for Cooler Weather

Take walks in the early am or evening when it is cooler. Dog paw pads are sensitive to hot asphalt and can burn.

Also, dogs who exercise in the hot sun can suffer from heat stroke, which can be debilitating and deadly.

Older dogs, those that are overweight, and breeds with flat noses are particularly susceptible to heat stroke. Dogs with heart and lung issues should be monitored carefully.

Possible signs of heat stroke in dogs include:

  • Excessive panting
  • Drooling
  • Abnormal breathing
  • Vomiting
  • Collapsing or weakness on feet
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Seizure
  • Bright red gums

If your dog is acting abnormally, especially in the heat, please contact your veterinarian or closest emergency hospital immediately.

Keeping Your Pet Safe in Hot Weather

With temperatures outside rising during the summer, it’s imperative that your pet has adequate conditions to keep them cool.

Basic necessities such as shade, cool water, escape from the elements, and air conditioning will keep your pets safe, happy, comfortable, and thriving.

If you need to leave your dog outside for any length of time in hot weather, give it fresh, cold water, and a way to escape from the sun.

Add fans or turn on the air conditioner when inside the home.

Long-haired animals are especially susceptible to heat even in the 70’s, so it’s very important to take precautions to keep their temperature down.

Dogs pant to cool themselves, as they are unable to perspire as humans do.

So, consider what your needs are to make yourself comfortable and offer the same to your pet, especially as the Tri-Valley is set to experience a heat wave.

Be Careful Around Swimming Pools

If you have a water dog, you will probably not be able to keep him out of the water. But some dogs can’t swim or tire easily and can actually drown.

Make sure your pet is supervised during any water activity.

Have a Safe and Happy Summer

The Ranch Pet Resort and Spa wants to wish you and your family a safe, happy, and healthy summer.

We hope our summer tips will provide you the best protection to keep your pets around for a long time.

Doggone Fun for Dad in Livermore on Father’s Day

June 9, 2022 by Michelle Bedard

Hey, Guys! Father’s Day is coming up, and we know just what Dad wants for his special day! We’ve compiled some doggone Fun for Dad in Livermore on Father’s Day!

What your Dog Dad Really wants on Father’s Day

It’s awfully tempting to wake Dad up on Father’s Day with our usual routine: licking his face until he gets out of bed; doing zoomies or running circles until he gets our leash to go for a walk; pawing his face or jumping on him until he puts down the paper and cup of coffee to feed us; placing our soggy ball or favorite toy on his lap until he gets up to play fetch; staring at him with our adorable eyes and wagging our tail until he pets our bellies; or making Chewbacca-like noises until he opens up the treat cabinet.

But this Father’s Day, let’s give Dad what he really wants! After all, this day is about celebrating what a great Dad he is! So chill out on getting dad up early; let him sleep in; get the kids to take care of us for the day; and spend the day curled up next to him dreaming of how great of a Dad he is!

Livermore Events for Father’s Day

We live in such a beautiful area, why not treat Dad to some Livermore events for Father’s Day? Here are a few doggone great suggestions:

Father’s Day Picnic and Live Music with Luna Fish at Retzlaff Vineyards

“The annual Fathers Day Picnic at Retzlaff returns Sunday, June 19th! Enjoy an afternoon with Dad, family, and friends (and wine) listening and dancing to the super fun Luna Fish band!

The event takes place on June 19 from 12:30-4:00 pm.

Heavy 4/70’s at R Place Music Club, Livermore

“HEAVY 4/70’s band members are veteran musicians with many years of recording and touring. The band has its own unique take on some of the most influential Hard Rock bands of all time.

A 4 band salute tribute to Aerosmith, UFO, Montrose and Thin Lizzy is the engine that fuels the bands energy which completely dominate their explosive live shows.

Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, the band consist of Derek Davis/Vocals – Danny De La Rosa/Guitar members of “Babylon A.D.” – Mike Holsworth/Bass “Jack Wagon – Marty Schuchardt/Drums “Greg Kihn.”
